data collection Flashcards
lecture 7
objectives
Understand the different types of data collection (self
report, tests, behavioural measures, physical
measures).
Outline the proper use of each type of data collection
tool.
Discuss the benefits and limitations of each data
collection too.
Explain which types of graphs are appropriate for
different data sets.
data collection, what are the self reported methods
survey, interviews and questionnaire
self reported could be_____ and ______what type of data
qualitative and quantitative
What type of questions are used in self reported data?
open-ended questions QUALITATIVE
closed questions QUANTITATIVE
rating scales QUANTITATIVE
what are the 3 types of questions errors?
loaded
double barrel
leading
what is double barrel?
2 questions in 1
how would you rate your diet and sleep?
what is leading?
Sways the respondent to answer in a desired manner
* “How satisfied are you with our product?”
A leading question is a question that suggests a particular answer and contains information the examiner is looking to have confirmed.
what is a loaded?
Contains unproved accusation/assumption and often has emotional terms
* Makes respondent “shameful” or “guilty”
The question implies that one response is morally or socially superior to the alternative response
self-reported -Interview (informal conversation)
Qualitative interviews are usually open-ended questions
* Typically recorded and transcribed, unless not feasible
or too intrusive
has a lot of OPEN ended question that spark conversations
*unguided and unstructured
semi-structured interview
partially guided has
completely guided
easy to summarize
contains specific questions
stay on topic
data collection - Tests
instruments and equipment are used to gather data
cons
-time-dependent
-interpretation of results
**for example a v02 max will be different indoors to the outdoor resulst
Data collection- Behavioral measures
observing and recording information
cons
-relativity people may act different if they know they ‘re being watched
-accuracy of recording information
classification of observation, 3 types
- Disguised and non-disguised
* Subjects aware OR unaware
* Type of deception
2.Laboratory versus natural setting
* Control OR realism
3.Direct versus indirect
* As it occurs OR after the fact
Data collection- physical measures
