Dandruff Lec 5 Flashcards
What is dandruff?
A cluster of corneocytes which have maintained a large degree of adhesion and detach as such from the surface of the SC.
Culprits of dandruff
Sebum, yeast (malassezia and pityrosporum ovale), individual susceptibility, and other culprits.
Seborrhoeic Dermatitis
Physiological scaling and inflammation, and can occur in other places other than the scalp.
Sebum in Dandruff
Sebum is a prereq for dandruff but is not the only requirement.
Impact of yeast on epidermis structure and function
It metabolizes sebum, and then generates lipid peroxides which may represent the primary initiators of inflammation. Left over unsaturated free fatty acids penetrate scalp and induce hyperproliferation.
