Bioinstrumentation Lec 3 Flashcards

1
Q

What are bioinstruments?

A

Devices that allow us to measure the various properties of skin on people while they are using products, include roughness, moisture, elasticity, barrier quality and appearance

Q

What is the Impendance machine?

A

Measures skin hydration. Based on electrical properties of stratum corneum. Decreased resistance that the skin offers to the passage of electrical signal. Hydrated skin has smooth and flexible S.C.

Q

What is a Corneometer?

A

Meter to measure moisture content in skin. Measures dielectric constant for skin; greater the water content, the larger the dielectric constant.

Q

What is Skicon?

A

Measures the high frequency conductance of the upper layer of SC; the dryness of skin and effect of treatment.

Q

What is an Evaporimeter?

A

Meter to assess the barrier quality by measuring the rate of water loss from the skin. Used to evaluate the effects of washing products as well as treatment lotions. Impaired skin barrier increases TEWL

Q

What is a sebumeter?

A

Measures the oiliness of skin by using a probe with a special plastic film that absorbs oil from the skin. The film’s transparency is then measured.

Q

What is a chromameter?

A

A meter to measure surface color of skin, by assigning a number to each color component of skin. Can measure irritation, tanning products, and blanching.

Q

What are D-Squames?

A

Adhesive disks to put on the skin, and then peeled off to measure dry skin flaking.

Q

What is a cutometer?

A

A device to measure elastic properties of the skin. A light vacuum force pulls skin up and lets go. It measures how far the skin gets pulled and how quickly it springs back. Used to evaluate the skin softening products.

Q

What is a dermal torque meter?

A

A proven method for evaluation of SC elasticity, where skin is “twisted” to see measure hydration.

Q

What are skin replicas?

A

Technique to make an exact impression of the skin surface. Can be used with computer analysis to measure roughness or fine lines and wrinkles.

Q

What is a scanning laser doppler?

A

Detects variations in superficial blood flow. Moving blood cells cause a doppler shift and provides a color coded image of blood flow. Colors change with good blood flow. Uses are for irritation, rosacea, and drug treatments.
