Define Damage Control
Minimising losses resulting from the outbreak of fire, and the effects of firefighting operations.
Legislation states that fire and rescue authorities must make provisions for the purpose of:
Ensuring reasonable steps are taken to prevent or limit damage to property resulting from action taken….to extinguish fires and protect life and property from fire
How can damage be caused (6)
Heat, smoke, steam, fumes.
Water or other extinguishing agents.
Debris, dirt or breakages.
Weather conditions on exposed interiors.
Deterioration of stock, plant and machinery.
Vandalism at insecure premises and theft.
What are the indirect impacts of fire (3)
Interruption of business.
Unemployment.
Loss of home/earnings.
List and describe the phases of damage control
Phase 1 - same time as firefighting. To prevent avoidable damage.
Phase 2 - lessening effects of damage already done.
Phase 3 - prevention of subsequent loss/damages and reinstatement of Services.
What makes for effective damage control (3)
Speed.
Safety.
Communication.
List the firefighting control measures to be considered (8)
Keep water used to a minimum. Reduce flow and branches as soon as practical. Use hosereel where possible. Use branches set to spray. Haul hose outside building. Replace damaged hose quickly. Close doors of unaffected compartments. Early ventilation.
