D1_L4: Research Statistics Flashcards
Independent variable
The variable that is manipulated in a study
Affects the dependent variable
Dependent variable
The variable that is measured to see if the independent variable was effective
Outcome of interest
Nominal variables
Think: NOminal NO order
Named attributes that are categories (order doesn’t matter)
Ex: marital status, blood type
Ordinal variables
Think: ORDinal - ORDered
Named attributes where order matters
Ex: Stages of pressure ulcers, star ratings
Discrete variables
Think: DIScreTe, DISTinctive
Restricted to a countable, distinctive finite set of indivisible values or categories within a range
Ex: number of times a patient has been contacted
Continuous variables
Can be any value w/in range, is divisible
Ex: Temperature, weight, speed
Dichotomous variables
Think: Di = 2
Only 2 possible outcomes/levels
Ex: disease or no disease
