CW Spec Point 4 Flashcards
Background
VW=Vietnam War in my notes not to write in Exam
The USA had a policy of Containment and believed in a domino theory if a country became communist leading to the US having a military involvement in Vietnam to stop the growth of communism. Vietnam had been part of French Indo-China, but fought for independence after WW2
Changing Public Opinion k1
Walter Cronkite who was one of the most trusted men in America told the American people that they were no longer winning the Vietnam War.
Changing k2
1968-My Lai Massacre was when Americans soldiers were ordered to and believed to be successful in killing everyone including innocent civilians in My Lai.
Changing ANP PRACTICE EXPLAINING
Silent Majority
Changing Eval
Changing Public opinion was main reason as the book ‘Vietnam The Necessary War’ the US lost as they “could not afford to do too much in Vietnam for fear of undermining American Public Support for the US Cold War Strategy.”
Strengths of North Vietnam k1
During VW, Vietcong made up of tough, determined soldiers who enlisted for many years and believed in their cause for Communism.
NV k2
During VW, Vietcong used to fighting in Jungle and Gorilla Warfare which they used to their advantage to set up Punji Sticks in holes in the ground and by ambushing Americans (coming out of bushes-don’t need to learn what is in this bracket/parenthesis)
NV ANP
Links to US Military Difficulties-Draft meant Vietcong more motivated than Americans as some Americans had been forced to fight in Vietnam.
NV Eval
only a problem as many Americans did not support as protests such as the one in Washington attracted half a million people in 1969
US difficulties k1
During VW Americans had draft which forced many American Soliders to fight even if they did not want to
Difficulty k2
During VW American Solidiers stressed out by fighting Vietnam Soliders and suffered mentally as they became addicted to drugs.
Difficulty ANP (maybe check rolling thunder)
Operation Rolling Thunder which involved a huge amount of bombing and was very expensive and Agent Orange (destroyed forests and caused illness/diseases for civilians) didn’t please the American population (linking to Changing As) meaning less people wanted to fight and less motivation
Difficulty Eval
“Be the case of a predominantly white power killing an Asian nation” 1964 US Church Leader-mention how this soon after I have a dream and how view was spreading across country
International Isolation k
Britain and France did not support the USA being in Vietnam and criticised Operation Rolling Thunder (killed many innocent people) despite being 2 of America’s closest allies.
II ANP really practice explaining
Australia and New Zealand gave the USA some military support meaning they were not on their own and had enough to defeat Vietcong.
