CVT Flashcards
What does CVT stand for?
Continuously variable transmission
What is a continuously variable transmission?
A type of gearbox that can achieve any gear ratio, meaning the optimal engine speed can always be achieved.
List 5 advantages of a CVT
Stepless change
No gear change jolt
Best gear can always be selected
Engine can remain in the optimal situation
Cheaper to produce
Give one disadvantage of a CVT
Less suitable for high power - maximum torque is limited
A CVT has 2 pulleys. Name them. How are they connected? How is the gear ratio adjusted?
Drive pulley
Driven pulley
Connected by a belt
Diameters of the pulleys are adjusted
If the drive pulley is smaller than the driven pulley in a CVT, is the transmission overdrive or reduction? Why?
Reduction
The larger pulley will rotate slower
What type of belt forms the connection between the 2 pulleys in CVT?
A push belt
List the main 7 components of a CVT gearbox (in order of the process)
Torque converter
Hydraulic clutch
Primary pulley
Drive belt
Secondary pulley
Output shaft
What does the primary pulley connect to? What about the secondary pulley?
The engine
The output shaft
What is the function of the torque converter? What 2 other components is it found in between?
Ensures the engine can continue running when the car is stationary
The engine and hydraulic clutch
What is the function of the hydraulic clutch? What 2 other components is it found in between?
Ensures the car can drive forward and reverse
The torque converter and primary (drive) pulley
List 3 things that will happen when reverse is selected
The primary pulley will rotate in the opposite direction
The secondary pulley (driven) will rotate in the opposite direction
The torque converter will continue to rotate the same way
What kind of gear system is found in a hydraulic clutch?
A planetary gear system
List 3 things that will happen when you press the accelerator
The diameters of the pulleys change
The output shaft turns faster
The engine (and drive pulley) remains at a constant speed
How is the pulley diameter made larger?
The belt is pushed outwards by bringing the 2 pulley halves closer together
