CVA Flashcards
Define CVA
Cerebral vascular accident is a rapid loss of brain function due to disrupted blood supply to the brain, either due to ischaemia or haemorrhage
2 types of ischaemic blockages
Embolus- forms elsewhere and travels to block cerebral arteries
Thrombus- forms in cerebral arteries
Risk factors
Obese, high bp, diet- high LDL, HIgh cholesterol, inactive, smoker
What 4 arteries supply the brain
2 internal carotid arteries (ant) and 2 vertebral arteries (post)
What areas do middle cerebral arteries supply
Frontal lobe, basal ganglia, motor- sensory cortex, Broca’s area
What areas does anterior cerebral artery supply
Frontal lobe, somatosensory cortex,
Posterior cerebral artery supplies what
Occipital, temporal (wernickes), thalamus
Basilar artery supplies what areas
Brain stem (pons, medulla, midbrain), cerebellum, nuclei of cranial nerves
How are ischaemic strokes classified
Bamford- TACS, PACS, POCS, LACS
CVA facts
80% ischaemic
Middle cerebral artery most commonly affected (frontal, motor sensory and basal ganglia affected)
