IPPB Bird Flashcards
What does IPPB stand for
Intermittent positive pressure breathing
How it works
Forces patients to take deeper breaths into the inspiratory reserve volume, larger than their tidal breaths- to a set pressure .
Patient triggers a breath and then positive pressure expands the lungs which increases lung volumes. Expiration is passive and the machine does not continue with positive pressure
Indications for bird
Drowsy patients, atelectasis, neurologically impaired and resp muscle weakness
Contraindications of bird
Untrained pneumothorax, emohysematous bullae, hypoxic drive in resp failure, flail chest segment, distended abdomen
How is bird delivered
Mouthpiece, face mask, tracheostomy
Pressure used on bird
Can be used up to 30cmh20 with caution, but pressure are less well controlled on IPPB than on NIPPV or CPAP so reduces risk of barotrauma
