What does IPPB stand for

A

Intermittent positive pressure breathing

How it works

A

Forces patients to take deeper breaths into the inspiratory reserve volume, larger than their tidal breaths- to a set pressure .
Patient triggers a breath and then positive pressure expands the lungs which increases lung volumes. Expiration is passive and the machine does not continue with positive pressure

Indications for bird

A

Drowsy patients, atelectasis, neurologically impaired and resp muscle weakness

Contraindications of bird

A

Untrained pneumothorax, emohysematous bullae, hypoxic drive in resp failure, flail chest segment, distended abdomen

A

Mouthpiece, face mask, tracheostomy

Pressure used on bird

A

Can be used up to 30cmh20 with caution, but pressure are less well controlled on IPPB than on NIPPV or CPAP so reduces risk of barotrauma
