Why is cultural psychology important?
To discover
a) whether concepts of personality that are prevalent in one culture is also applicable in other cultures
b) whether certain features of personality are universal
What are the different environmental contexts that influence one’s life?
- Microcontext = immediate situational factors (family, school, society)
- Macrocontext = distal situational factors (social class, gender, race, culture)
According to matsumoto (2000), culture is
a dynamic system of rules
- explicit rules and implicit
Established by groups to ensure survival
Shared by a group but harbored differently by each specific unit within the group
Communicated across generations, relatively stable
Activity from class with dispositional attributes and role-specific
Dispositional Attributes: I am kind; I am tall
- Generally more independent
Role-Specific: I am a daughter; I am Korean-American
- Generally more interdependent
Cultural View of Self
Independent Self-Construal (individualism)
- Bounded, autonomous
- Separate from the social context
- Comprised of values, abilities, attributes
- Resistant to outside pressures
Interdependent Self-Construal (Collectivism)
- Context and situation-specific
- Connected with others
- Maintaining balance and harmony
- Comprised of social roles, duties and relationships
Collectivism
the views, needs and goals of the ingroup + readiness to cooperate with ingroup members
Factors that contribute to I-C include

Migration (rural; urban)
