Stressed management’s responsibility for workers well-being. Becomes a bigger focus than labor unions.
Palmer Raids
U.S. officials storm headquarters of radical groups, arrest and deport immigrants without trials. Overreached in summer of 1920 when Palmer claimed there were plots to overthrow government, but nothing came of it.
Sheppard-Towner Federal Maternity and Infancy Act
(1921) First federally funded healthcare legislation. Funds for clinics, prenatal education, and visiting nurses.
Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom
Women peace advocates from around the globe denounced imperialism, stressed horror caused by militarism, and proposed social justice measures.
Associated State
Government working closely with businesses hoping for stable wages and prices. Business leaders got too much power in policy making.
Teapot Dome
Secret leasing of government oil reserves to private companies. Involved the administration of Harding from 1921-1923.
Dollar Diplomacy
Critics name for loan guarantees. Using financial power to increase international influence.
American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU)
Formed to protect free speech fought against law that prevented evolution in school.
Scopes Trial
H.S. biology teacher who taught evolution, jury found them guilty, supreme court eventually overturned, but law remained (1925)
National Origins Act
(1924) Annual immigration from each country could not exceed 2% of that nationalities percentage of U.S. population in 1890. Majorly restrictive.
Harlem Renaissance
Intellectual and cultural revival of African American culture.
Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA)
Lead by Marcus Garvey. Thought that black Americans should move to Africa since he believed they would never be treated fairly in a white-run society. Movement collapsed when Garvey was imprisoned.
Pan-Africanism
Idea that all Africans throughout the world should cooperate in politics together.
Consumer Credit
Can borrow money and go into debt. Starts happening for the first time in American history. Popularized by the automobile in the late 1920s.
