What is culture?
large social group made up of close geographic proximity of each other and share beliefs and values.
What is cultural psychology?
interdisciplinary study of how culture reflects and shapes the mind and behaviour of its members.

What is the common western belief?
individuals are independent of each other
- Value autonomy, self-sufficiency, personal rights, unique identity
What is the common eastern belief?
individuals are interdependent on each other
- Value group well-being, harmony, common goals, shared values
What is difference between individualistic and collectivist culture?
Individualistic culture - people given a choice
Collectivist culture: the host is expected to read the friends mind.
What is self-enhancement?
the motive to persue and maintain a positive self-view
What is the difference in levels of self-enhancement between westerners and easterners?
Westerners tend to self-enhance.
Easterners tend to self-enhance less. - use more negative terms to describe themselves. More realistic about the future, provide less inflated ratings of merits.
Easterners self-improve more, and acknowledge rather discount negative feedback. more prone to self-criticism
