What is culture
The knowledge, belief, art, morals, laws, customs and any other capabilities and habits acquired by humans as members of society.
what is a subculture and examples
Relatively large groups of people who share characteristics that identify them as a distinct entity. ex-native americans, nurses, religious groups, appalachians etc.
minority
group of people whose physical or cultural characteristics differ from the dominant culture. ex-men in nursing
transcultural nursing
focuses on culturally competent nursing

developed “Culture Care Diversity and Universality” to promote culturally congruent care for people of different or similar cultures tailored to fit the patient’s cultural values.
acculturation
the process by which members of a cultural group adapt to or take on the behaviors of another group
cultural blindness
the inability of people to recognize their own values, beliefs and practices and those of others because of their own ethnocentric tendencies.
Cultural imposition
the tendency to impose one’s cultural values on a person from another culture
culturally competent nursing care
Effective, individualized care that demonstrates respect for the dignity, personal rights, preferences, beliefs and practices of the person receiving care while acknowledging the biases of the caregiver and preventing these biases from interfering with care provided.
Cultural awareness or sensitivity
An awareness of cultural differences that might be present in the health care delivery process
