What is Cross-Cultural Nursing?
AKA: Transcultural nursing
Any nursing encounter where the nurse and patient come from different cultures
What is cultural competence?
When a nurse considers cultural aspects of health, illness, and treatment for each client, community, as well as doing each stage of the nursing process
What is institutional cultural competence?
When a community / public health agencies are cultural competent which means:
have a defined set of values and principles. They also demonstrate behaviors, attitudes, policies, and structures that enable them to work effectively cross-culturally
What is cultural humility
Understanding that we do not know everything about different cultures.
-ask open-ended questions
-ask about traditions
what does pt think -causes their illness
-what have they already tried to address it?
What is Ethnocentrism
The assumption that everyone shares your cultural values, or an opinion that your culture is superior to others
What is subculture?
groups tat share some practices, language, or other characteristics in common within a larger society that does not share those characteristics
example: our nursing class, homeless, the disabled, race

What is transcultural nursing?
providing care to pts and families across cultural variations - acknowledging, respecting, and adapting to the cultural needs of pts, families, and communities.
What are health disparities?
Significant gap in health status between overall American population and people of specific ethnic backgrounds
Cancer, heart disease, diabetes, HIV, AIDS, other conditions
What is Leininger’s Theory (2002)
