What is culture?
beliefs, customs, values, attitudes that distinguish 1 group from another and are transmitted through arts, education, literature, and language
What is the Sapir Whorf Hypothesis?
human thoughts and actions are determined by the languages that person speaks
what is linguistic determinism?
all human thought and action is controlled by language
what is linguistic relativism?
language partially influences human thought and action
high context cultures-
colectivist cultures where context and relationships among speakers is realyl importat. rely on non verbal communication and rules and trasitions. japan, China, Middle East, Africa etc.
low context cultures
individualistic cultures- loose and informal. things are much more explicitly stated. facts, evidence, background info is stated outright in convos rather than inferred
what is a monochronic culture?
time is linear. 1 event at a time. Punctuality is prioritized. stark divide between work and leisure
What is a polychronic cuture?
time is more holistic. many things can happen at one. flexibility valued, not punctuality. relationships valued. schedules are flexible.
what are some differences in cultural expectations that would affect your classroom?
eye contact
group work
non verbal affirmative cues
student participation
formal vs. informal class culture
cheating vs. helping classmates mentatlity
What are the 4 stages of acculturation?
honeymoon
hostility- homesick, and at odds with new culture.
humor- acceptance phase. tendency towards extremes, critical of home cutlure.
home - comfortable in new culture. embrace new cuture as “home” fully assimilated
