cultural deprivation Flashcards
what are the 3 external factors?
cultural deprivation, cultural capital and material deprivation
what is cultural deprivation?
where people lack the basic cultural tools needed for success at schools
what are the 3 aspects of cultural deprivation?
parents education, working class subculture, and language
which study links to parents ?
douglas
what does douglas argue?
w/c parents place less value on their child’s education, they give less encouragement and visit the school less for days like parents evening so no progress is being discussed with teachers
what study links to working class subculture?
sugarman
what does sugarman argue?
there are four key barriers to educational achievement for children
what are the four key barriers?
fatalism (belief in fate, there is nothing you can do to change) , collectivism (you value being part of a group more than succeeding on your own even if you’re held back by group loyalties), immediate gratification (seeking pleasure now rather than sacrificing the future), present time orientation (seeing the present as more important than the future and not having any long term goals)
what study links to language?
bernstein
what does berstein argue?
there are two types of speech codes; restricted and elaborated
what is the restricted code?
limited vocabulary spoken by w/c with short and unfinished sentences. it is context bound so the speaker assumes the listener shares the same experiences
what is the elaborated code?
wider vocabulary spoken by middle class with longer complex sentences. it is context free as the speaker does not assume the listener shares the same experiences
what does bernstein also argue?
m/c have an advantage as schools (teachers and workbooks) use elaborated code whereas w/c have a disadvantage as they cant access what is going on in class
what does blackstone and mortimore argue?
blackstone and mortimore argue that w/c parents attend fewer parents evenings as they work longer hours and are put off by the m/c atmosphere. the w/c may want to help but don’t have the knowledge to do so
what does kelly argue?and what does tryona and williams argue?
tryona and williams argue that the issue is not that child’s language but the schools attitude towards it. teachers have a speech hierarchy and label m/c speech highest and kelly argues that the wc are just culturally differnet and deprived
