Culture - def
Social identity, passed from generation to generation, that includes communication, customs, beliefs, values and behaviors.
Worldview - def
an individual’s perception of the world around them in relation to his/her culture.
Cultural Diversity - def
variations amount cultural groups within a society.
Generalization - def
a conclusion derived form limited or incomplete evidence/knowledge.
Stereotype - def
categorizing a person or group based on an oversimplified, standardized image.
Prejudice - def
an opinion based on insufficient knowledge or inaccurate stereotypes.
An unfounded, dislike, fear, or mistrust of a person or group.
Ethnocentrism - def
the belief that one’s own culture is better than others.
Assimilation - def
Full adoption of behaviors, customs, values and language of the mainstream culture.
Acculturation -
The process of initially learning the norms and values of another culture and beginning to adopt the cultural behaviors and language.
Cultural competence - def
Practicing effectively in cross cultural situations. Working well with others despite cultural differences.
Cultural Sensitivity - def
considering the cultural needs of others while providing care. Recognizing personal beliefs and values and ensuring they do not negatively impact nursing care.
Health Disparity - def
inconsistency in health status or outcomes related to environment, access to care, utilization of care, or quality of care.
