Leeds has the 3rd highest levels of inequalities in the UK

There are high disparities between different areas of Leeds (Beeston + Holbeck in the south east and Horsforth in the north east) In Beeston and Holbeck 4.3% of people claim unemployment benefts compared to 0.9% in Horsforth

Unemployment rates in the favelas are very high at 20% and 1/3 of people work in the informal sector (government cannot claim tax to imrpove the city)

There are housing problems in Rio with over 100,000 in migrants each year

There are 1000 favelas in the greater Rio de Janeiro area which are built illegally with poor materials - built on steep slopes (mainly concentrated in the North Zone) In non-improved favelas 50% have no sewage connections

How did the Favela Bairro Project help improve quality of life in the favelas?

A

Pacifying Police Units (UPP) introduced in 2008 where armed police units drove criminal gangs and introduced a permanent police presence. This meant that authroities could start to provide services e.g schools, rubbish collection, healthcare

How did the Favela Bairro Project help to reduce unemployment?

A

In Teleferico do Alemao, a cable car system was built to enable residents tp get from one end of the favela to another in 16 minutes compared to 2 hours. This connected to Rio’s railway network to allow favela residents to reach employment opportunities in the city centre -> broke down in 2017 due to lack of money for maintainence
