Location
Where a place is on a map, its longitude and latitude
Locale
The place where something happens or is set, or that has particular events associated with it
Sense of place
The subjective and emotional attachment to a place. People develop of sense of place through experience and knowledge of a particular area
Placemaking
The deliberate shaping of an environment to facilitate social interaction and improve a community’s quality of life
The importance of place can be explored by looking at its impact on the 3 aspects of a person

Areas that have no unique features or characteristics, could be anywhere in the world
How does identity link to sense of place?
Our sense of place can be so strong that it features as a central part of our identity
Changes in the nature of places may affect people and their identity
Glocalizaton
The action of multinational companies to adapt according to the local market place e.g McDonalds removing pork from their menu in Muslim countries

Gender
Sexuality
Socio-economic status
Religion
Level of education
Perception of a place
The meaning and importance of a place to a specific person
Positionality
Where different people will perceive places in different ways
What is an insider and give examples of why they may feel this way
A person who feels welcome and like they belong in a place
They may be born there, be fluent in the local language, have the rights to work and vote, conform to social norms
What is an outsider and give examples of why they may feel this way
A person who does not feel like they are welcome or belong in a place
This may be because they do not speak the local language, be a temporary visitor, cannot work or vote, misunderstand social interactions
Near place
A place that has a close geographical distance to a person or they have a strong emotional connection to it
Far place
A place that is geographically far or people do not have a strong emotional connection to it
Experienced place
Places that a person has spent time in and formed their own perception of through experience
Media place
Places that a person has not visited, their perception is formed through books, film or music
Give an example of a media place
Maya Bay, Thailand
Made popular by the film ‘The Beach’ so people expect it to be quiet and tranquil when they visit. However, the reality is not the same as the media representation with it to 5,000 visitors in one day during peak season with tourist boasts damaging the coral reef
Endogenous factors
Internal characteristics of a place that help to shape its unique character e.g the demographic and physical geography
Exogenous factors
External influences on a place through relationships of that place with others. This is shown by the flow of people, money, resources and ideas
Descriptive approach to a place
The idea that the world is a set of places and each place can be studied and is distinct
Social constructionist approach to a place
Where a place is seen as a product of a set of social processes happening at a specific time
Phenomenological approach to a place
How each individual person experiences a place with their perception and attachment
