Please define the traditional family definition:

There are different categories of families. Please explain the “Nuclear Family” and what are the Man’s and woman’s role in this family is.

- It builds your perspective about marriage and family in general

- Also called the family of cohabitation
- It is the family you begin when you get married and have children
How can you define the “Today’s post modern family” ?
- Old definition does not seem to fit any more according to many social scientists (Edward 1991: Stacy 1996)

- This is meant to include more variable arrangements

Binuclear Family
Created when people marry and bring in children from previous marriage/relationships
Possibility of a child being found a binuclear and blended family

The extended family
This is where family is seen as more than nuclear.
It includes uncles, aunties, nephews, cousins
Please explain Kin and affiliated Kin
Kin and affiliated Kin
Kin would be relatives by blood, marriage, remarriage or adoption
Includes grandparents, nieces, brother in laws
May not all live in the same house
Affiliated Kin unrelated individuals treated as though they are related.
E.G. godparents (Patenschaft), boyfriend of a divorced mother:
Primary indicator is emotional closeness rather relationship through marriage, remarriage or adoption
Please state the four benefits of William Goode (1982)
- Economies of Scale-family produces more than an individual would.
Reduction in the cost per unit because of the increased size of the household production facilities. - Proximity: Convenience- Child rearing and caring is a family affair. It is not an individual issue.
- Familiarity: At your best and at your worst family will be there. Acceptable as you are!
- Continuity: Family will always be there for you. Family support is long term.
**Patterns of residence: **
In some cultures members of extended families live in close to one another.
Please state the 3 common ways in which families establish residence.
Neolocal Residence
- Newly married partners setup their own household not connected with the bride or grooms family
- This was once just common in the west
- It is a culture embracing many a societies today
Patrilocal residence
- Newly married establishes a home near or in a groom’s father’s house or family
- About 69% of the world’s societies practice this
- Patrilocal residence is the most common.
Matrilocal residence
- Newly married established a home near or in a bride’s mother’s house or family
- This is residence is not as commonly practised
