CSNCER DIAGNOSIS/TREATMENTS Flashcards
What are the three cancer screenings available?
Bowel, cervical and breast
What is sensitivity in terms of cancer screenings?
How accurate the screening test is in identifying disease in those who have the disease
What is specificity in terms of cancer screenings?
How accurate the screening test is in correctly classifying non diseased people
What does a cervical screening show?
HPV positive indicates possible cancer
What does a bowel screening show?
FOT (change in blood colour) or FIT (detects blood in stool)
What are the cytotoxic drugs used in cancer treatment?
Alkylating agents, antimetabolites, topoisomerase, tubular acting drugs
What do alkylating agents do?
Cause direct DNA damage and block replication
What do antimetabolites do?
Sabotage a cancers genetic material so it cannot replicate (purine, pyrimidine, folic acid)
What do topoisomerase inhibitors do?
block enzyme action
What do tubulin acting drugs do?
block chromatid separation
What does advexin target?
gene therapy for p53
CA125 tumour marker is associated with which cancer?
ovarian
What is the name of internal radiation?
brachytherapy
What regulates P53?
MDM2
What is the role of Nutlin 3?
Inhibit P53 -MDM2 interaction
What are telomeres?
Protein complexes at the end of chromosomes that are crucial for survival of cancer cells
