CANCER Flashcards
What is a carcinoma cancer?
Epithelial cancer which begins in the skin or tissues lining organs
What is sarcoma cancer?
cancer beginning in connective or supportive tissues e.g. bones
What tissue is the most common cancer?
Epithelial tissue
What can DNA damage affect?
- normal growth genes which are mutated into oncogenes
- tumour suppressor genes are inactivated
- DNA repair genes are inactivated
What is an oncogene?
cancer inducing gene
What is a proto oncogene?
Genes promoting differentiation and proliferation of normal cells
Do carcinomas develop quickly or over time ?
Over time
Which virus is associated with lymphoma?
Epstein Barr Virus
What is the name of an epithelial cancer?
Carcinoma
Which DNA repair pathway is BRCA1 involved in?
Homologous recombination
What is the major function of K- RAS?
Intracellular cell signalling molecule
What two chemical reactions cause DNA damage?
deamination and depurination
What is deamination?
removal of an amino group
What is depurination?
loss of a purine base
How many types of DNA damage are there?
Two - single and double
