What is the historical context of Tel Aviv?

A

-Tel Aviv was evacuated during the first world war, but following the conflict the population of Tel Aviv grew rapidly mostly due to migrants who found Tel Aviv to be attractive
-The city’s population grew rapidly from 1920 when 15000 people inhabited Tel Aviv to 230,000 people by 1947
-In 1948 the Jewish state of Israel was established and saw Tel Avivs boundaries grow to 42km squared
-The 1960s saw the creation of Israels first high rise buildings including Shalom Meir tower which remained Israels tallest building until 1999
-By the 1970s Tel Aviv had started to experience population and urban decline
-Cramped housing conditions, high property values and teh Yom Kippur war pushed people away from the area
-Tel Avivs population fell by 20% as a result of natural increase due to an ageing population and migration to other Istraels cities

How has Tel Aviv rebranded?

A

-The 1980s witnessed rejuvenation in Tel Aviv as a 24 hour city culture developed as night time venues opened to serve the large of Israelis in Tel Aviv and surrounding cities
-This period coincided with the opening of Israels first shopping mall, the Dizengoff Cente in 1983, the construction of the Marganit tower in 1987, the Suzanne Dellal centre for dance and theatre in 1989
-The 1980s saw several embassies relocate to Tel Aviv
-In the early 2000s, local government focused on attracting more young residents to the city
-Derelict areas such as Tel Aviv port and Jaffa railway station were converted into leisure spaces and older areas were gentrified and redeveloped
-In 2016 the city’s mayor approved the master plan for Tel Aviv which included the development of 120,000 new hosuing units in addition to the 100,000 houses that were already being built

What is the role of sport within Tel Aviv?

A

-The city is the only city to have 3 football teams in the Israelis premier league
-In 2009 Tel Aviv marathon was resurrected after a 15 year break and from 2016 has attracted 40,000 entrants every year from across the globe
-In line with its slogan ‘non stop city’, sporting events such as the annual night run, the womens race and mud run all help attract tourists and new inhabitants to Tel Aviv

A

-The city is home to 18 of Israels 35 major performing arts centres including the national theatre of Israel, the Habima Theatre
-Around 100 years after its creation, the Habima has recently been the centre of a $26 million development programme
- Restaurants, night life, galleries and a world renowned reputation for welcoming LGBTQ people have helped promote the city as one of the most vibrant and creative places in the world

A

-Tel Aviv global aims to use national initiatives to position the city as a global brand, a hub of innovation and entrepreneurship and a leading tourist destination
-It aims to make the city one of the largest tourist destinations in the world by 2030 through utilising the 14km coastline and the vibrant urbinism such as the culture, nightlife and food
-Tel Avivs smart city initiatves aims to help Israel meet targets from the Paris Agreement 2015 through a number of strategies
-Decentralised energy production such as the Tel Aviv solar roof project uses a budget of NIS 50,000 (US$14,000) to map solar energy potential in order to encourage specific residents to install solar roof systems with discounted suppliers and financial assistance
-The green label for businesses encourages business in Tel Aviv to adopt green practices such as reducing energy use, sustainable water use and streamlined procurement processes

Why did Tel Aviv port need rebranding?

A

The port opened in 1936 but was only used to full capacity for its first 3 years. Despite several attempts to reinvigorate the port, it failed to be full utilised and was eventually closed in 1965. It lay derelict and disused until 2002.

What are the re branding projects and players in Tel Aviv?

A

-In 2002 a competition was announced by the port managment to revive port areas and the vital spaces present in the area
-The project took 5 years and 5 million dollars to construct and was completed in 2008
-Old port hangars and warehouses were redeveloped and gentrified to provide opportunities for businesses such as bars, restaurants and shops
-However the us of timber for the sand dune boardwalks has led to falls when wet and a lack of vegetation in the design has been criticised
-Overall the re branding has brought international attention to the area, raised Tel Avivs reputation and increased the use of this long-neglected, underutilised part of the city
