Where is most CSF made?
Choroid plexus in the lateral, third and fourth ventricles
Which foramenae does CSF flow through, to enter to subarachnoid space?
Magendi and Luschka
Where is CSF reabsorbed into the venous system?
The superior sagittal sinus
What does raised protein suggest about the CSF?
Infection or inflammation
Where is the needle placed in lumbar puncture?
Subarachnoid space at the level of the 3rd and 4th lumbar vertebrae
What are the contraindications of LP?
Raised ICP
Local skin infection
Suspected spinal cord mass or cranial mass lesion
Uncontrolled bleeding diathesis
What does increased volume in the baby and infant cause?
Widening of the sutures and fontanels
What are the two situations that lower cranial perfusion pressure?
Decrease in MABP; increase in ICP
What are the signs of hydrocephalus in infants?
Enlarging head circumference
“Splaying” of sutures
Setting-sun sign
Prominent scalp veins
How might hydrocephalus present in older children?
Cognitive deterioration, headache, neck pain, vomiting, blurred vision, drowsiness, difficulty walking
What are two possible causes for hydrocephalus?
Aqueductal stenosis, Arnold-Chiari malformation
How is hydrocephalus treated?
Ventriculoperitoneal shunt
