Crankshaft and Related Components Service Flashcards
Flywheel Removal
Leave two bolts in before installing guide studs and then removing last two bolts. Some flywheels may required the use of lifting device.
Vibration Damper removal
Never hammer or pry on damper, if force in necessary use the appropriate puller
Before removing the main bearing caps:
Make sure to check for marking to identify cap position
When removing lift straight as possible and watch for:
Counterweights and throws catching on the main bearing webs
Binding between the thrust bearings and the crankshaft
Crankshaft storage
Crankshaft should be stored vertically and bolted to the flywheel
Crankshafts that are to large to be stored vertically can be stored horizontally in special v-blocks or crates
Bearing cap storage
Main bearing caps should be reinstalled in to the block for storage
Crankshafts can be cleaned using
Petroleum solvent
Hot tank
Mechanical parts washer
Steam cleaner
Crankshafts should be visually inspected for:
Scoring Riding Discolouration Damaged threads Grooves on seal surfaces
Crankshaft measurement
Cranks should be measured for taper, out of round, and wear, as well as distance on thrust faces
When measuring make sure to stay away from fillet radius and oil holes
Flywheel inspection
Cracks in flywheel surface, and ring gear teeth
Check for chipped or worn teeth on ring gear
Thread damage
Damper inspection
Any movement greater the 1/16” indicates that the bond has broken between the rubber and the interia mass in rubber damper.
Viscous dampers are often replaced during major overhaul
Viscous dampers should be inspected for cracks, signs of fluid leakage, and dents
Crankshaft failures usually the result of:
Incorrect or excessive loading
Incorrect service procedures
Lubrication problem
Torsional loads
a uneven twisting force, most likely to cause breaks in the area of the connecting rod journal
What happens with incorrect crankshaft end play?
Insufficient - lack of lubrication, results in damaged thrust surfaces
Excessive - side loading of the pistons and con rods, as well as crankshaft to contact the webs of block
List two reasons for using proper lifting equipment when handling heavy engine components?
Prevent personal injuries
Prevent component damage
