Camshaft and Follower Service Flashcards
Checking backlash with cam idler
Backlash should be measured in two locations: Between crank and idler, between idler and cam
Chain drives
Should be checked for the amount of chain slack. Rule of thumb is that deflection should not exceed 1/2” at midpoint
Proper storage of cam followers is necessary for what reasons
They should be kept in order for inspection and diagnosis purposes
If followers are to be reused, they have established wear patterns and should be returned to that lobe
Camshafts should be inspected for:
Scuffing, Scoring, Discolouration Cracks and Surface fatigue
What shape should lifter heads have?
To be reusable, the lifter face should be flat or slightly convex
Roller type lifters should be inspected for:
Scuffing, Scoring, Smooth operation of roller, and play in the bushing or bearing. The roller should be measured for out or round and minimum diameter
Camshaft thrust plates should be inspected for:
Signs of wear, Scoring, Cracks, Measurement of the plate for minimum thickness
Worn camshaft bearing will:
Not support the camshaft properly during engine operation, Increase camshaft journal to bearing clearance - can cause decreased oil pressure, Reduce the flow of lubrication to the valve operating mechanism on some engines
Normal cam bearing wear should occur where?
Side directly opposite the cam followers
Camshaft follower installation
Followers must be lubricated thoroughly before installation. Flat faced lifters should be lubricated with a extreme pressure lubricant, roller lifters can be lubricated with clean engine oil.
What check should be preformed on the camshaft drive gears before disassembly?
Drive gear backlash
Thrust plate retaining bolts must be removed so the:
Camshaft can be
Valve and injector lobes can be measured with cam still in the block using a?
Dial indicator
