Craniovertebral Joints Flashcards
What is the Atlanto-Occipital Joint
Joint b/w C1 and occipital bone
yes movement
What is Atlanto-Axial Jion
B/w atlas and axis
provides no movement
Ligaments of the craniovertebral joint main f(x)?
Stabilize the joint
protect medulla and spinal cord
prevent excessive movement
some are extension of ligament of the spinal column
What are the ligaments of the Craniovertebral joint
anterior atlanto-occipital membrane
membrane tectoria
posterior atlanto-occipital membran
cruciate ligament
Alar ligament
Anterior atlanto-occipital membrane
extension of the anterior longitudinal ligament
goes from the atlas to the occipital bone
Membrana Tectoria
extension of posterior longitudinal ligament of spinal column
goes from axis to occipital bone, posterior to cruciate ligament
Posterior Atlanto-Occipital Membrane
Extension of ligamenta flava
goes from atlas to the occipital bone
What is the transverse ligament
it is one of the components of the cruciate ligament
transverse band within vertebral canal which is attached to inner side of the inferior bands
Tear to the cruciate ligament causes what?
Dens of C2 to drive into the spinal cord and/or medulla.
Spinal cord damage is quadriplegia
Medulla damage will result into death :(
Cruciate ligament contains what?
Transverse Ligament
Superior Band
Inferior Band
Alar Ligament
check ligament
extends laterally from dens to occipital bone
Prevent excessive rotation of head
