What are craniopharyngiomas?
Slow growing (grade 1) tumors that start above the pituitary gland but below the brain itself.
What problems can craniopharyngiomas cause?
They may press on the pituitary gland and the hypothalamus, causing hormone problems.
How can craniopharyngiomas affect vision?
Because they start very close to the optic nerves, they can cause vision problems.
What cells do craniopharyngiomas arise from?
Tumors arising from Rathkes pouch cells above the pituitary.
What is the nature of craniopharyngiomas?
Benign and encapsulated.
Who is most commonly affected by craniopharyngiomas?
Common in children but they are sometimes seen in adults.
What is the primary treatment for craniopharyngiomas?
Surgery.
Why is surgery for craniopharyngiomas challenging?
The tendencies to stick to important structures make them hard to remove completely without damaging vision or hormone balance.
What is another treatment option for craniopharyngiomas?
Radiation Therapy.
50-54 Gy.
