Cranial nerves within the tongue Flashcards
What four cranial nerves innovate structures in the tongue
Trigeminal - 5
Facial nerve - 7
Glossopharyngeal - 9
Hypoglossal - 12
What is the trigeminal nerve responsible for
General sensation from the anterior 2/3 of the tongue
What does the facial nerve do within tongue
Chorda tympani - branch which carries the neurons which are responsible for carrying the specialised sensation of taste from anterior 2/3 of tongue
Function of the glossopharyngeal nerve
Responsible for innovation of the posterior third of the tongue
Carries both general and specialised (taste) sensation
SOMETIMES VAGUS INCLUDED (motor)
Responsible for gag reflex/pharyngeal reflex
What nerve is responsible for the motor innovation of the tongue
Hypoglossal nerve
(runs under tongue)
Innovates all muscles of tongue except one (palatoglossus nerve-Vagus)
