Cranial Nerves Flashcards
Cranial Nerves exit from here
Forebrain CN 1
Thalamus CN 2
Brainstem CN 3-12
Formation of cranial nerves
Dorsal (sensory)
Ventral (motor)
-Sides of neural tube get pushed outward to make a roof plate, which contains the 4th ventricle
Sulcus limitans separates these regions
Ventral from dorsal
General Somatic Afferent
Skin, muscle, CT
Ceneral Visceral Afferent
Organs, blood, vessels
Special Somatic Afferent
Vision, audition
Special Visceral Afferent
Taste, olfaction
General Somatic Efferent
Skeletal muscle
General Visceral Efferent
Smooth and cardiac muscle (ANS)
Special Somatic Efferent
None
Special Visceral Efferent
Muscles of face, larynx, pharynx, mastication
Cranial nerve nuclei are arranged this way
Longitudinally
Solitary nucleus (SVA) receives taste from
VII, IX, X
Nucleus ambiguus (SCE) projects neurons out along
IX, X
Special visceral efferent is associated with this and develops from this
pharyngeal, neural crest
CN I test Olfactory
odor
CN II test Optic
visual acuity and fields, opthalmoscopy
CN III test Oculomotor
PERRLA (pupils equal, round, reactive to light, accomidation)- equal ocular motion while following finger
CN IV test Trochlear
moving eyes side to side- equal ocular motion while following finger
CN VI test Abducens
equal ocular motion while following finger
CN V test Trigeminal
sensory to face, motor to masticators and other muscles
Corneal blink- corneal pain and irritation- elicits eye closure
Trigeminal’s 4 functional Components
Principal sensory nucleus- touch to face
Spinal Trigeminal nucleus- pain and temp

CN VII test Facial
Facial expression, salivation, taste, somatosensory input from ear
-Smile, frown, wrinkle brow, wink
CN VIII test Vestibulocochlear
rubbing fingers, humming, tuning fork
CN IX test Glossopharyngeal
gag reflex– sensory component of IX to X reflex connection
CN X test Vagus
Gage reflex, raise tongue to rough of mouth, check for deviated soft palate
CN XI test Accessory
Shrug shoulder, persist pressure on forehead, chin
CN XII test Hypoglossal
stick tongue out
Know functions of all CN
