Q
Vagus nerve - X
A
- 4 branches
- Travels with sympathetic nerve through chest to vagosympathetic trunk
- Also passes recurrent laryngeal nerve
- Mixed fibres
3
Q
XI - Accessory
A
- Originates in brainstem + C1-C& spinal cord
- Motor to muscles of neck + limb
4
Q
XII - Hypoglossal
A
- Motor to muscles of tongue
- Passes through hypoglossal foramen
5
Q
I - Olfactory
A
- Sensory - olfaction
- Passes through cribriform plate to innervate olfactory mucosa
6
Q
II - Optic
A
- Sensory - vision
- Passes through optic foramen
7
Q
III - Occulomotor
A
- Motor - eyeball movement + parasympathetic - miosis + accommodation of lens
- Passes through orbital fissure
8
Q
IV - Trochlear
A
- Motor - eyeball movement via dorsal oblique muscle
- Passes through orbital fissure
9
Q
V - Trigeminal
A
has 3 divisions:
- Ophthalmic - sensory
- Maxillary - sensory
- Mandibular - sensory + motor
10
Q
VI - Abducens
A
- Motor - eyeball movement via lateral rectus + retractor bulbi muscle
- Passes through orbital fissure
11
Q
VII - Facial
A
- Sensory: rostral 2/3 tongue
- Motor: muscles of facial expression
12
Q
VIII - Vestibulocochlear
A
- Sensory
- Passes with VII into internal acoustic meatus
- Functions - hearing + balance
13
Q
IX - Glossopharyngeal
A
- Mixed fibres
- 4 branches
