Cranial Nerves Flashcards
CN I
Olfactory (smell)
CN II
Optic (Vision)
CN III
Oculomotor (Elevates Eyelid; Motor-control of the eye)
CN IV
Trochlear (Internal rotation; Motor-control of the eye)
CN V
Trigeminal (MIXED)
- General sensory on face: Touch, pain, pressure, hot, cold
- Motor: To muscles used for chewing
CN VI
Abducens (Eye Abduction; Motor function)
CN VII
Facial (Mixed)
- Tast from anterior 2/3 tongue (sweet/salty)
- Motor muscles for facial expression, tear glands, and some salivary glands
CN VIII
Vestibulocochlear or Acoustic (Ear)
- Vestibular branch: Sensory for equilibrium
- Cochlear branch: Sensory for hearing
CN IX
Glossopharyngeal (Mixed)
- Sensory for posterior 1/3 of tongue (sour/bitter), pharynx, & palate
- Sensory for blood pressure: Located in the carotid bodies
- Motor to pharyngeal muscles (swallowing), Salivary gland (parotid)
CN X
Vagus (Mixed) - The major parasympathetic nerve
- Sensory from pharynx, ear, diaphragm, visceral organs
- Motor to palatal and pharyngeal muscles (swallowing and voice) and viscera
CN XI
Accessory: Motor to voluntary muscles; lateral flexion and rotation of neck
CN XII
Hypoglossal: Motor to tongue (swallowing and speech)
Motor of tongue
CN XII: Hypoglossal
Controls motor function for neck/head rotation
CN XI: Accessory
Helps control viscera organs; also known as the major PNS nerve
CN X: Vagus
Sensory for the posterior 1/3 of tongue and blood pressure
Motor for swallowing and salivary glands
CN IX: Glossopharyngeal
Sensory for equilibrium and hearing
CN VIII: Vestibulocochlear (or Acoustic)
Sensory for anterior 2/3 of tongue
Motor for facial expressions
CN VII: Facial
Motor control of eye abduction
CN VI: Abducens
Facial touch, pain, pressure, hot, cold
Motor for muscles involved in chewing
CN V: Trigeminal
Motor control of eye internal rotation
CN IV: Trochlear
Motor control of eyelid movement
CN III: Oculomotor
Vision
CN II: Optic
Smell
CN I: Olfactory
