Cranial Nerve V Flashcards
the sensory nerve of the face
CN V
CN V has motor fibers to these muscles
muscles of mastication
3 divisions of CN V
ophthalmic, maxillary, mandibular
the 3 divisions have their nuclei in this ganglion
gasserian or semilunar
CN V spares this area of the face
the area over the angle of the jaw
the angle of the jaw is innervated by this nerve
great auricular nerve
CN V supplies these muscles of masication
temporalis, masseter, medial pterygoid
CN V also innervates these muscles which open the jaw or causes lateral movement of jaw
lateral pterygoids
primary action of the right lateral pterygoid
move jaw tip to the left
primary action of the left lateral pterygoid
move the jaw tip to the right
with CN V, bilateral corticobulbar lesions cause
permanent paralysis of volitional jaw movement
peripheral nerve disease affecting CN V is usually responsible for
sensory impairment
sensory impairment of CN V usually causes atrophy of
temporalis and masseter muscles
when the ophthalmic division of CN V is involved it causes
neuroparalytic keratitis (corneal inflammation and ulceration)
idiopathic syndrome that has sharp or painful facial sensation in a clear distribution of one of the divisions of CN V
trigeminal neuralgia
