his methods of combining spiritual strength and political awareness were very popular and Congress could not oppose him as Besant had little cause, Tilak died in 1920 and Gokhale died in 1915- there was no one like him
What was Gandhi’s aim for the Raj?
To make it ungovernable, leading it to die within a year and swaraj to follow
what does non cooperation entail?
boycotting elections remove children from government schools boycott law orders withhold taxes refuse to buy imported goods
What was a problem with non cooperation?
Some of these things encouraged were too unrealistic for people with jobs like lawyers and parents would still send their children to school
What were some of the initial successes of non cooperation?
students boycotted examinations,taxes were not paid, large number of voters stayed away from the 1920 elections and 200 lawyers stopped work
What were some failures of non cooperation satyagraha?
millions were unwilling or unable to understand satyagraha. Violence broke out in different places
Eg Bombay hartal led to 4 days of rioting
In malaba, muslim moplahs killed british people and rich hindus and muslims
When did campaign end and why?
1922 when a mob of Congress supporters torched a police station in Chauri Chaura in Gorakhpur killing 22 and Gandhi was sentenced to 6 six years in prison
