What 4 things happened while Gandhi was in prison?
Congress got more involved with peasant communities and gained a better understand of them
Congress became more ready to understand and exploit local grievances and how these could be linked to swaraj
Members of congress were allowed to stand for election to the councils set up by the Raj
Raj balanced need to control but also care for India eg cholera and smallpox inoculation programme started
By how much did Congress membership grow and in what year and how did they grow?
100k to 2 million by 1921
Spread appeal into wider geographical areas in subcontinent and showed interest in neglected groups
What did Gandhi do on his release going ‘Back to basics’?
Set up All India Spinners Association promoting self sufficiency
Persuaded Congress to embark on campaigns of mass literacy and improvements of village sanitisation
Spoke on behalf on untouchables to try enable them into Indian society
Who were the young hooligans?
Bose, Narayan and Nehru
What did the young hooligans do?
Lobbied All-Indian Congress Committee and Congress Working Committee
They wanted independence and action and refused dominion status
What was dominion status?
being equal in status in allegiance to the crown
What was the Simon Commission and when was it?
1927 Formed to analyse the Government of India Act (1919) and suggested further reforms
Boycotted because no Indian was included

When was the Nehru Report and what did it consist of and why were Muslims not happy with it?

Recommended dominion status for India the same way as in Canada and Australia. Suggested princely states and British India to be joined as a federation leading to Hindus being the permanent majority in government threatening the Hindu Muslim alliance
When was the Lahore Congress and what happened?
1929
Gandhi decided to support the young hooligans and purna swaraj become the new demand
Why did Gandhi want to oppose the salt tax?
Although the salt tax was only about 1.5p a year, the issue came with the fact that salt was a commodity used by all classes in India for cooking etc but since the Raj was in charge of its production it was an ideal issue to oppose the Raj
When did the Salt March start and what happened?
1930
Gandhi set out from his house in Ahmedabad and chose 78 supporters to go with him including untouchables. However thousands followed them and it challenged the Raj
Hundreds of peasants were arrested and Gandhi was also arrested leading to strikes and protests.
How could you evaluate the salt satyagraha?
By 1931 the Raj had gotten things in order and civil disobedience essentially ran out of steam
