CP 3221 Flashcards
What is a place?
More than its physical location, a place is space given meaning by people. (Eg London, a church or a chat room).
What are the three aspects of place?
Location, locale and sense of place.
Explain location as an aspect of place.
Where a place is on a map - its latitude and longitude. Eg Leeds is 5348N 132W.
Explain locale as an aspect of place.
The place where something happens or is set, or has particular events associated with it.
We behave in a particular way in these places, according to the social rules we understand. Eg a school bus / chat room.
Explain sense of place as an aspect of place.
The subjective (personal) and emotional attachment to a place.
People develop a sense of place through experience and knowledge of a particular area. Eg a mother’s arms or ‘home’.
What are the three theoretical approaches to place.
- descriptive approach
- social constructionist approach
- phenomenological approach
Explain the descriptive approach.
The idea that the world is a set of places and each place is distinct and can be studied.
Explain the social constructionist approach.
Sees place as a product of a particular set of social processes occurring at a particular time.
Eg Trafalger square was built to commemorate British Naval Victory in the 1800s can be understood as a place of empire and colloquialism.
Explain the phenomenological approach.
How an individual experiences place.
For example, the degree of attachment, involvement and concern that a person or group has for a place is critical in understanding place.
What is the importance of place?
- promotion of place is crucial in marketing holiday destinations
- food items eg strawberries are marketed in terms of the place where the food is from
- popularity of place may be linked to the reputation of the place they happen. Eg Glastonbury
- people define themselves through a sense of place and by living in places and carrying out a range of everyday activities there. A person- place relationship is developed
