Covid pandemic Flashcards
What were the positive lessons learnt from the management of the COVID pandemic?
Broadly/nationally:
1) Healthcare resources and supplies were not sufficient and had been depleted/non-sustained as advised (e.g. PPE).
2) A stretched and strained health service in normal times will struggle to cope with staggering increases in demands (may do initially, but this is not sustainable)
Specifically/locally:
1) The escalation of need and the response highlighted positives (e.g. Collaboration, communication and sharing of resources across the critical care network)
2) Forced clinical teams within trusts to re-engage with one another around a common goal (silos broken down)
3) Highlighted importance of wellbeing and psychological support for staff
4) highlighted importance of AHP cover and presence in highest acuity areas
5) Advancement in ways of working and modernisation of IT practices.
6) Development of new clinical research strategies
What have been the negative effects of the covid pandemic?
Losses:
1) patient lives lost
2) loss of function and employment for: i) survivors of illness, ii) employment roles that were lost.
3) loss of staff from the health service
Service demand:
1) Stress and burnout from repeated covid waves
2) Sustained demand with attempt to catch up on treatments not possible during covid
3) Exacerbated demand on current staff due to loss of skilled/trained staff to: sickness, organisations outside the NHS, stress, industrial action.
