Transmission
Spread by respiratory droplets - this is infected secretions carrying the virus spread through coughing, sneezing and can be spread through airborne, touch.
Incubation Period
- 1 to 14 days
- Median 5-6 days
- Infectious peak - 24hrs before showing symptoms
What is an epidemic?
Rapid spread of disease to a large number of people in a given population within a short period of time
What is a pandemic?
An epidemic of an infectious disease that has spread across a large region, for instance multiple continents or worldwide
What is an endemic?
A disease or condition regularly found among particular people or in a certain area.
What is an outbreak?
A sudden occurrence of something unwelcome, such as war or disease.
Clinical presentation
- Cough
- Fever
- Sore Throat
- Headache
- Loss of taste and smell
- General Malaise
- Rhinorrhoea
Prevention
- Handwashing
- Social distancing
- Mask wearing
- Isolaiton
- Vaccines
What is herd immunity?
Resistance to the spread of an infectious disease within a population that is based on pre-existing immunity of a high proportion of individuals as a result of previous infection or vaccination.
