chronic— > 8 wks / for children > 4 wks
possible causes for chronic cough
infection (assocaited with other sx like fever)
asthma / COPD / non eosinophilic bronchitis / chronic bronchitis
upper airway cough syndrome (post nasal drip—rhinitis)
reflex diseases (GORD—assocaited w heartburn)
lung cancer (pay attention to newly developed cough / change in cough pattern / blood in the sputum
medication (ACE inhibitor)
specific treatment is better than non-specific treatment Y/N

specific treatment for infection-induced cough
macrolide / trimethoprim-sulfomethoxazole
specific treatment for asthma-induced cough
generally respond well to rountine asthma tx
ICS / bronchodilator
prednisone
specific treeatment for rhinitis-induced cough (post-nasal drip)
antihistamine/ intranasal corticosteroid
non-eosinophilic bronchitis will respond to the ICS Y/N

non-specific treatments include
neuromodulator (work at CNS / peripheral)
mucolytic agent
list the drugs for non-specific treatment (neuromodulator)
codeine / morphine
dextromethorphan
amitriptyline
gabapentin / pregabalin
