In 1862 it cost 4s and 8d to keep a pauper but only 3d to keep a pauper on outdoor relief. Economic historian estimates it cost 50-100% more to have a pauper on indoor relief than outdoor relief

  • forced into a workhouse age 12 so felt first hand realities of poverty which motivated him to give a voice to poorest in society
  • wrote Oliver Twist 1837-39 which provided people with an image of life for the poorest in society.
  • Oliver Twist was a serial novel which meant that a new chapter was released weekly making it cheaper for more people to read
