Correlations Flashcards
1
Q
What are the two types of Correlations?
A
- Positive (two variables rise or fall together)
- Zero correlation is when there is no relationship between the variables
2
Q
What are three strengths of Correlations?
A
-A useful preliminary tool for research, asses strength and direction of a relationship, they provide a precise and quantifiable measure of how 2 variables are related. Suggest ideas for possible reasearch?
- used as a starting point to access possible patterns before committing to a study.
- Quick and economical as no controlled environment/ manipulation of variables needed. Secondary data can be used, less time-consuming.
3
Q
What are three limitations of Correlations?
A
- Only tells us how variables relate and not why, cannot demonstrate cause and effect or establish the direction of effect
- Potential untested variable causing relationship (intervening variable)
- Can be misused/misinterpreted, Relationships can sometimes be presented as causal when they aren’t especially be media
4
Q
What are the two distinctions between correlations and experiments?
A
- No IV DV in correlations (just co-variables)
- Cause-and-effect relationships cannot be established
5
Q
What is a Correlation?
A
- Plotted on a scatter-gram and tells us strength and direction of a relationship between 2+ co-variables
