Q

define correlation

A

determining the extent of association between two variables
they may be linked= zero correlation
they increase together= positive correlation
as one increases the other decreases= negative correlation

A

a number between -1 and 1 that tells us how closely co-variables in correlational analysis are associated

Q

evaluate the strengths of correlations

A

+ used to investigate trends in data. If significant then justifies further research. If not then it can be ruled off as a casual relationship

+ procedures in a correlation can be easily repeated so findings can be confirmed

Q

evaluate the weaknesses of correlations

A
  • in correlations variables are simply measured and no deliberate change is made, therefore correlations cant establish cause or effect
  • may lack internal/external validity
