Core materials Flashcards
what is a ferrous metal?
a metal that contains iron
what is a non ferrous metal?
a metal that does not contain iron
what is an alloy?
a mix of two or more metals
what’s some examples of ferrous alloys?
low carbon steel, medium carbon steel, cast iron
what’s some examples of non ferrous metals?
gold, zinc, copper, aluminium
what’s some examples of non ferrous alloys?
brass, duralumin, bronze, pewter
what’s some examples of ferrous alloys?
stainless steel, die steel
what types of metals are there?
ferrous, non ferrous, alloy
what types of woods are there
hardwood, soft wood, manufactured board
what’s a hard wood?
wood that comes from deciduous trees which loose their leaves in winter
what’s a soft wood?
wood from coniferous trees that do not loose their leaves in winter
what’s a manufactured board?
a manmade composite material which is made out of softwood
what’s some examples of hardwoods?
oak, mahogany, teak, birch
what’s some examples of softwoods?
pine, larch, Douglas fir, redwood
whats some examples of manufactured boards?
MDF, plywood, chipboard, block board
what types of polymers are there?
thermoplastic, thermosetting plastic, elastomer
what is a thermoplastic?
thermoplastics can be melted down and recycled when heated due to their long liner molecular chains
what is a thermosetting plastic?
thermosetting plastics can not are melted down when heated due to their heat resistance cause by rigid molecular crosslinks
what is a elastomer
elastomers have very loose molecular bonds. this means that even when at room temperature they can be manipulated when force is applied. one the force is released they will turn back to their original shape and length
what’s some examples of thermoplastics?
ABS, PMMA, LDPE, HDPE, HIPS, PP, PET, PVC, nylon
what’s some examples of thermosetting plastics?
epoxy resin, polyester resin, UF, MF
what’s some examples of elastomers?
natural rubber, silicone, neoprene, polybutadiene
why are papers and boards compliant materials?
they are seen as compliant materials as the can be scored, folded and cut with basic tools
what’s some examples of papers?
layout, cartridge, tracing, bleed proof, watercolour, treated
what’s some examples of cards?
corrugated, bleached, mount board, duplex, metal effect, foil backed, laminated, moulded paper pulp
what are composite materials?
2 or more materials that have been either mixed or used together in order to combine there properties in one form
what’s some examples of composite materials?
CFRP, GRP, tungsten carbide, aluminium composite board, concrete, fibre cement, manufactured board
what are smart materials?
a material of which physical properties change in response to changes to its environment
what’s some examples of smart materials?
SMA, thermochromatic pigment, thermochromatic film, phosphorescent pigment, photochromic pigment, electroluminescent wire, piezo electric material
what is a modern material?
a material developed through invention of new or improved processes. man made materials or human intervention
what’s some examples of modern materials?
kevlar, PMC, high density modelling foam, polymorph
what are the 2 categories of material properties?
mechanical and physical
what are the stock forms of timber?
rough sawn, planed square edge, planed all round, natural wood, manufactured boards and mouldings
