Core 2: CQ1 P3 Flashcards
Respiratory system
Facilitates the exchange of gases between the air we breathe and our blood
Lungs difference
Left: has two lobes- cardiac notch to accumulate the shape of the heart
Right: three lobes- slightly thicker, broader and shorter than left
Bronchi
Former from breaching of trachea
Alveoli
Covered in tiny capillaries
It is here the alveolar and capillary walls that the actual exchange of gases occurs across a thin membrane
Pulmonary ventilation
Breathing
Movement of air from the atmosphere into the alveoli
Pulmonary diffusion
Exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the lungs and the blood
Transport of respiratory gases
Transportation of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the lungs and the tissue cells of the body via the blood
Internal respiration
Exchange of gases between the blood and capillaries and the tissue cells
Respiration process
Breathing- moving the air into and out of lungs (ventilation)
External respiration- exchanging gases between the air in the lungs and the blood
Gas transport by blood: transport of oxygen to the body cells and the return of carbon dioxide
Internal respiration: exchanging gases between the blood and the body cells
Cellular respiration:using the oxygen in cell processes and the production of carbon dioxide
Respiration equation
Food+oxygen—- energy+CO2+H2O
