What is a controlled drug CD
A
- A drug that causes harm when misused
- Often have potential for abuse as recreational drug or for other purposes
- E.g. anabolic steroids for bodybuilders

Name some laws relating to CD
A
- The human medicine regulation 2012: replaced most of medicine at 1968. Part 12 deals with medicinal products. It allows exemptions. E.g. nurse giving morphine
- Misuse of drugs act 1971: controls and prohibits CD. Divided into classes A, B and C
- The health act 2006: introduced accountable officer, requires HC to have SOPs in place for CDs

What are schedule 1 CDs
A
- E.g. LSD, ecstasy, mescaline, cannabis
- Majority have no therapeutic use
- Pharmacists can only have these for destruction, give to police

What are schedule 2 controlled drugs
A
- E.g. diamorphine, morphine, methadone, oxycodone, ketamine
- Supply is restricted to licensed wholesaler
- Prescription valid for 28 days
- RP or emergency supply not allowed
- CD register for supply and delivered meds

What are schedule 3 CDs
A
- E.g. buprenorphine, midazolam, phenobarbital, temazepam and tramadol
- New ones are pregabalin and gabapentin
- CD prescription requirements
- Valid 28 days
- Emergency supply not allowed

What are schedule 4 CDs for
A
- Write like a normal POM prescription
- Exempt from safe custody and CD entry record
- RP and emergency supply allowed

What are schedule 5 CDs
A
- Contains certain schedule 2 CDs in low strength e.g. codeine, pholcodine and morphine
- Invoices must be kept for two years
- Some are available OTC

Max supply for schedule 2, 3 and 4 CD drugs
A
- Upto 30 days
- Schedule 1 is recreational so cant be prescribed anyway
- Schedule 5 you can buy otc

Who can prescribe CDs
A
- Doctors - any except schedule 1
- Pharmacist IP, nurse IP - any schedule 2, 3, 4, 5 controlled drug (except diamorphone, dipipanone or cocaine for addiction)
- Physiotherapist IPs - prescribe for the treatment of organic disease all must be oral though except morphine

A
- For all schedule 2 CDs and sativex (schedule 4)
- Seperate page for each strength and form of that drug
- Must record date obtained, name and address of wholesaler, quantity

How long must CD entries be kept for
A
two years

On the day or the following day

Electronic CD registers
A
- Every entry must be attributed to who made it
- Must be accessible from premises and capable of printing
- Entries cant be altered later - safeguard

Owings of CDs
A
- Owings: when you cant supply full amount at once
- CD register must only record whats actually been supplied
- Owing balance can not be dispensed later than 28 days of the prescription
- For schedule 5 can be upto 6 months
