Control + Social Bond Theory Flashcards
Name the 2 types of social control?
- Informal - range of sanctions (+ve/ -ve)
2. Formal - based on organisation e.g. police, CJS + other organisations such as education
What sociologists is the most well-known figure in the control theory?
Hirschi (1960)
How do Hirschi and Durkheim have similar views?
How do they have different views?
BOTH believe that social order = based on shared values + socialisation
BUT control theory takes opposite approach
Instead of asking what drives people to commit crime, Hirschi asks why most people DON’T commit crimes
What did Hirschi ID that stops people from committing crimes?
ID 4 social bonds with pull people away from crime + persuade them to conform to S’s rules
What are the 4 social bonds that Hirschi ID?
- Belief (share moral beliefs e.g. right for respect of others)
- Attachment (people have a stake in conformity, e.g. don’t want to risk getting sacked otherwise, can’t feed families)
- Commitment (people = sensitive + interested in wishes of others e.g. family, family/ those in local community)
- Involvement (people are involved + kept bust with sports teams, schools, religious activities - have no time/ opportunity to commit crime)
