How do they have different views?

A

BOTH believe that social order = based on shared values + socialisation
BUT control theory takes opposite approach
Instead of asking what drives people to commit crime, Hirschi asks why most people DON’T commit crimes

  1. Belief (share moral beliefs e.g. right for respect of others)
  2. Attachment (people have a stake in conformity, e.g. don’t want to risk getting sacked otherwise, can’t feed families)
  3. Commitment (people = sensitive + interested in wishes of others e.g. family, family/ those in local community)
  4. Involvement (people are involved + kept bust with sports teams, schools, religious activities - have no time/ opportunity to commit crime)
