Contrast Media Flashcards
Paste Mixture
3/4 barium sulfate 1/4 water
substances having high or low atomic numbers compared having adjacent structures
Contrast Media
Thick Mixture
1/2 barium sulfate 1/2 water
- substance that partially absorb x-ray
- it appears black on the radiograph
RADIOLUCENT OR NEGATIVE CONTRAST AGENTS
Barium Enema
Thin Mixture
Cardiac Series
Thick mixture
It cannot be dissolves in water
Colloidal Suspension
Administered to the body to fill on the hollow organs and make it visible to the film.
Contrast Media
Most commonly used air contrast media?
- Calcium Carbonated Crystal (Gastroluft)
- Magnesium Citrate
- Room air
- Carbonated beverages
What are the methods of administration of Contrast media?
- Oral
- Parenteral ( Intravenous, Intrathecal, Intra-arterial)
- Intubations (T-tubes, nasograstic)
- Rectal (Catheters)
Thin Mixture
1/4 barium sulfate 3/4 water
U.G.I.S
Thick mixture
Milk Mixture
2 tbsp. barium sulfate 1 glass water
What are the purpose of scout film?
- To check for the proper preparation of the patient.
- To check for the correct position of organ to be examined.
- To draw out the presence of foreign bodies and other calcification
- To compare the film with contrast media with that of the scout film.
- To adjust the correct factor to be used.
- To localize the exact localization point.
Substance that absorb x-ray
RADIOPAQUE OR POSITIVE CONTRAST AGENTS
Esophagram
Paste mixture
What are the common substances as Contrast Media?
- Air and Gases
- Heavy Metallic Salts
- Inorganic Iodides
- Organic Iodides
- Iodized Oil (Abosorbable)
- Iodized Oil (Non-absorbable)
What are the forms of Contrast Media?
- Solution
- Tablet
- Granules or powder
uses two kinds of c.m. in different manner of introduction.
Dual contrast study
What are the 2 types of Contrast Media?
- Radiolucent
- Radiopaque
a small amount of c.m. is used just to coat or paint the lining membrane of the hollow organ under study.
Mucosal phase study
uses two kind of contrast media.
Double contrast study
a full dose of c.m. is used for study of general outline, shape, size, position as well as the anatomical contour and morphological deformities.
Filling phase study
Render white image on the film because it is positive contrast media having a high atomic number.
BARIUM SULFATE (BaSO4)
also called survey films, preliminary film, plain film, and initial film.
Scout Film
What are the qualities of good contrast media?
- It must clearly show the structure creating a different marked contrast with the density of the surrounding tissue.
- It must be physiologically inert.
- It must produced as little toxicity as possible to the patient.
- It must be eliminated unchanged
A non absorbable contrast media, it causes constipation when it stays for a long period of time inside the colon.
BARIUM SULFATE (BaSO4)
What are the types of radiographic contrast study?
- Single Contrast Study
- Double Contrast Study
- Dual Contrast Study
- Mucosal Phase Study
- Filling Phase Study
uses one kind of contrast
medium.
Single contrast study
What are the rules in giving contrast media?
- Be sure that you have the right patient by asking the name and carefully checking the name in the chart.
- Be sure that you have the right contrast media at the right time before doing the procedures.
- Be sure that you have the right contrast media and the right amount.
- Never hold the tablet or powder form contrast media with your bare hands.
- Record on the chart of the patient the amount of contrast media used and write initial on the chart.
What are the disadvantages in using Barium sulfate?
- Colloidal Suspension
- Contra-indication
S.I.S
Thick mixture
What are the qualities of Barium sulfate?
- High atomic number
- Relatively cheap
- Less irritating
- Non-absorbable
