What are the salient features of consumer protection act
1) APPLICATION OF THE ACT - This act applies to both ‘goods’ and ‘services’. Goods are the ones that are manufactured, produced and sold to Consumers through dealers. While services are those for which payments are made. Services include transport, telephones, electricity, roads, sewage, etc . These are generally provided by the PUBLIC SECTOR ENTERPRISES.
2) REDRESSAL MACHINERY - Three-tier grievance redressal machinery has been established under the consumer protection act to settle the grievances of the consumers as regards the goods and services.
3) EXPENDITIOUS DISPOSAL - To prevent consumers from waiting too long for justice, the act has a provision that all grievances will be settled within 90 days from the date of notice received by the opposite party. This period is applicable for complaints which do not opened laboratory analysis testing.
4) ADVISORY BODIES:- REDRESSAL advisory bodies i.e. consumer protection council and central consumer protection council have been set up at state and national level respectively
5) THE RIGHTS OF CONSUMER:- Rights have been spelt out under this act.
