Construction Technology - Level 3 Flashcards

1
Q

What is value engineering?

A

Maximising project value given time, cost and quality constraints.

Value engineering can on some occassions require an increase in capital expenditure.

Q

How does value engineering differ to value management?

A

Value Management - early stages of the project, design phase.

-Multidisciplinary, workshop based and third party facilitator.

Value Engineering - detailed design and construction phase.

  • Single discipline approach, technical analysis.

Q

What are the 5 stages of value engineering?

A
  1. Information Gathering - ensure the problem is understood.
  2. Creative Thinking - identify different soloutions.
  3. Analysis, evaluation and shortlisting - of the proposed soloutions.
  4. Deveopment - the shortlisted soloutions should be developed to understand cost and programme implications.
  5. Presentation - final soloutions clearly developed and presented to relevant stakeholders.

Q

What benefits did galvanized steel offer?

A

Galvanized steel, is steel coated in a layer of carbon and is more resistant to rust. This would have extended the shelter’s life expectancy from 20 to 25 years.

Q

How did the lighter weight troughing improve safety?

A

Reduced weight of the trough, lessened strain on workers joints and manual handling risks.

The original troughing material was made from concrete and I suggested the use of a new glass reinforced concrete troughing system.

Standard trough was 6 meters in length and 250mm wide, the new form of concrete reduced weight from 38Kg to 25Kg per trough.

Q

How did the troughing reduce resource requirements?

A

Depending on the exact nature of the shift, the new troughing reduced labour requirements by 1 to 2 people. This was a saving of roughly £370 per person for each shift.

Q

Are you qualified to be recommending the use of materials?

A

Recommending the use of materials is beyond the scope of my professional expertise. Therefore, any suggestions I made on materials or technologies was always followed up with the caveat that this should be discussed and approved by the relevant engineer.

Q

What are the catenary and contact wire?

A

The contact and catenary wires form part of the OLE system.

The contact wire is 25Kv and provides electricity to the train via contact with the trains pantograph.

The catenary wires is to provide support to the contact wire and runs parallel with it.

Q

What savings did the new clamp provide?

A
  • Half an hour faster to install compared to old clamp.
  • 2 Teams of 2, installing 6 each in a 8 hour shift.
  • New clamp, teams could install 12 clamps in a shift.
  • Saving approximately £25K per shift for each shift completed with the new clamp. Double the amount of work was being delivered in each shift.
