Which projects does CDM apply to?
All construction projects.
What does CDM set out to do?
Focus on planning, strengthen cooperation and coordination and integration. Simplify competence assessment and raise standards.
What are domestic clients duties?
Not notifiable. Must appoint a Principle Designer and a Principal Contractor (if there is more than one contractor). Contractor duties automatically transferred if not. Duties can be transferred to the designer via contract.
What is a domestic client?
Own home. No connection to a business or a local authority. (App. 6)
What is a notifiable project?
For a non-Domestic Client, a notifiable project is one which:
Takes 30 days or more AND
Has 20 workers or more working simultaneously OR
500 person days.
How do you notify the HSE?
The Client must sign and send a Form F10.

What are the Client’s H & S responsibilities?
Makes sure the process is well managed, with correct duty holders appointed who will collaborate to achieve a ‘safe’ project. Domestic Client’s duties are transferred.
What specific aspects should the Client ensure?
Ensure the construction phase does not start unless there is Suitable welfare facilities provided

Should Clients supervise work on site?
No.
Name the Principle Contractors main roles.
Commitment to H & S. Coordinate contractors, prepare construction phase plan, provide welfare, H & S induction and training, secure site, site induction, display key project info.
Name the Principle Designer’s main roles.
Designers should identify and minimise safety issues at the planning stage. They control pre construction information including H & S file, ensure upkeep of safety file, hand to client on completion.
When is a construction phase plan required?
On every construction project. Even if you are a plumber just installing a bathroom.
